Amelia Etta Hall Johnson

My paper will focus on the life of Amelia Etta Hall Johnson and her piece, “Some Parallels
of History,” published in 1899 in the National Baptist Magazine. Johnson was born on the
eve of the Civil War and lived most of her life in Baltimore, Maryland. In this piece, she
argues the validity of separate black institutions by likening the situation of black people at
the time to the former situation of American colonists. I will likely reference Nell Painter’s
piece, “Representing Truth,” to discuss the ways black women chose to be represented in
their lives when they often were framed by others. Additionally, Johnson discusses her
perception of history in a nonlinear way, and I would like to relate this to Elsa Barkley
Brown’s piece about the politics of difference. I would like to find sources about reactions
to her piece at the time and the audience of the National Baptist Magazine to understand
how she framed her argument more.
