bethany veney // susie king taylor

For my midterm paper, I'd like to do a close reading of either Bethany Veney's The Narrative of Bethany Veney - A Slave Woman or of Susie King Taylor's Reminiscences of My Life in Camp
with the 33rd United States Colored Troops.

Both women have incredible stories. Bethany Veney's story caught my attention because certain themes that were pertinent to many African-American women during the 19th-century came up (i.e. religion, motherhood, being formerly enslaved, etc...). Susie King Taylor's story is really interesting to me because she escaped from slavery, opened a school for African-American children, and was a laundress, cook, nurse, and teacher for the 33rd United States Colored Troops and traveled with them and was with them on the battlefield.

I think at this point I'm leaning more towards Susie King Taylor's story, but I'm not sure which theme(s) I want to focus on. Maybe something about violence (on the battlefield) and how it was perceived by formerly enslaved African-American women.
