I am inspired by your tenacity in defying your master, who was also your father, and your mistress in deciding who you wanted to marry. You endured the punishment of taxing field labor and little rest to maintain your right to dictate your life and claim your humanity. It is admirable that in such difficult times, you were still able to fight for your human rights. Not only do your children and grandchildren look up to you as a powerful woman, but so do all who hear your story through the story of your granddaughter, Ellen Baker.
