Elizabeth Keckley/ WPA

I have 2 ideas for my midterm paper. The first is to focus on Elizabeth Keckley. Keckley is a lesser known American civil rights activist with a very full life. Born a slave in 1918 in Virginia, she lived in slavery for over 30 years before gaining her freedom. Mrs. Keckley moved to the DC area and became a very successful seamstress with a clientele that included the wife of general Robert E. Lee. Later in life she became the seamstress as well as confidant and advisor to Mary Todd Lincoln while Lincoln was first lady. Keckley is a very interesting individual to wrote about, though the other direction I could go with this midterm is to analyze a few of the slave narratives from the WPA, the Arkansas Narratives, Part 4 in particular. This is in the form of an audio book on iTunes, which would make it easy to access. As of now, I quite torn and am not sure which direction I’ll go.
