Aunt Cheney Cross of Evergreen, Alabama described her early life in a narrative from "Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from The Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938," the project by the Works Progress Administration. In the writing, Aunt Cheney detailed her many responsibilities including, cooking, cleaning, and caring for the family's children. She then proceeded to highlight the effects of a "yankee" raid and the end of the war on her relationship with her parents and the mistress.
Furthermore, I plan to use Aunt Cheney's account and previous class readings to complete an analysis of the "mammy" archetype and the relationship between African American women caring for their children and those of other individuals.
